How Tight Should Your Prescription Glasses Be?

A good pair of prescription glasses should feel secure enough to stay in place while remaining comfortable throughout the day. If your glasses constantly slide down your nose or leave painful marks behind your ears, they probably do not fit as they should.

Finding the right fit is just as important as having the correct prescription.

How should glasses feel?

When you first put your glasses on, they should feel stable without squeezing your head.

They should:

• Sit level on your face.

• Rest comfortably on your nose.

• Stay in place when you look down.

• Feel balanced without pinching.

• Be comfortable for long periods.

You should quickly forget you are wearing them.

Signs your glasses are too tight

Frames that are too tight can cause discomfort and may become increasingly irritating throughout the day.

Common signs include:

• Pain behind your ears.

• Red marks on your nose.

• Headaches caused by pressure.

• Tightness around your temples.

• Difficulty wearing them for long periods.

Although some light marks on the nose can be normal, they should disappear fairly quickly after removing your glasses.

Signs your glasses are too loose

Loose glasses are equally frustrating.

You may notice:

• Glasses sliding down your nose.

• Needing to push them up repeatedly.

• The frame moving when you walk.

• Glasses falling forward when you look down.

• Crooked positioning on your face.

A secure fit helps keep your eyes aligned with the optical centres of your lenses.

Do glasses stretch over time?

Yes. With everyday use, most frames gradually loosen.

The sides may become slightly wider, hinges may loosen and nose pads can move slightly over time. This is completely normal and is one reason occasional adjustments are often needed.

Should you adjust them yourself?

Small adjustments should be made with care.

Trying to bend frames without the correct tools can damage them, particularly metal frames or acetate frames that require heating before adjustment.

If your glasses suddenly become uncomfortable after being dropped or sat on, inspect them carefully before continuing to wear them.

Choosing the right frame size

The best fit usually starts with choosing the correct frame size.

A frame that is far too wide or narrow is unlikely to become comfortable through adjustments alone. Taking the time to choose a frame that suits your face can make a significant difference to comfort.

Comfort matters every day

Your prescription glasses should provide clear vision without becoming something you constantly notice.

When your glasses fit properly, they stay securely in place, feel comfortable throughout the day and allow you to focus on everything else instead of adjusting your frames every few minutes.
