A day at the beach is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, and if you rely on prescription glasses, there's no reason you can't wear them while you're there.

However, sand, salt water and sea spray mean your glasses may need a little extra care.

Can you wear prescription glasses at the beach?

Yes. If you need your glasses for clear vision, wearing them at the beach can make walking around, reading and enjoying the scenery much easier.

The main consideration is keeping them protected from the environment.

Be careful around sand

Sand may look harmless, but tiny particles can scratch lenses if they're rubbed across the surface.

If sand gets onto your glasses, avoid immediately wiping the lenses with a cloth.

Instead, rinse the particles away with clean water before gently cleaning the lenses.

What about sea water?

An occasional splash isn't usually a problem, but salt residue can dry onto your lenses and frames.

If your glasses come into contact with sea water, rinse them with fresh water when possible.

Dry them carefully using a clean microfibre cloth.

Don't leave glasses loose on the beach

Placing glasses directly onto a towel or beside your belongings makes them easier to lose, scratch or accidentally sit on.

Whenever you're not wearing them, put them inside a protective hard case.

Keep the case somewhere secure inside your bag.

Avoid leaving them in excessive heat

On a sunny day, enclosed spaces such as a parked car can become extremely hot.

Avoid leaving your prescription glasses somewhere exposed to excessive temperatures for long periods.

Keep a microfibre cloth with you

Sea spray, sunscreen and fingerprints can quickly leave marks on your lenses.

Keeping a clean microfibre cloth inside your glasses case means you can easily clean them throughout the day.

Consider taking a spare pair

If you're spending the whole day away from home or travelling on holiday, a spare pair of prescription glasses can be extremely useful.

If your everyday pair becomes lost or damaged, you'll still have clear vision available.

Enjoy the coast with clear vision

There's no reason prescription glasses should stop you enjoying a day beside the sea.

Keeping them safely stored when they're not being worn and taking a little extra care around sand and salt water can help your glasses stay clear, comfortable and protected throughout your day at the beach.
